South Bronx:August 1980
In the summer of 1980, John Fekner stencils Broken Promises, Falsas Promesas, Decay, Broken Treaties, Last Hope and Save Our School on the walls and buildings of Charlotte Street in the South Bronx. The message of the Charlotte Street Stencils focuses on pointing out the deteriorating conditions and issues that plagued the community since the 1960s. Fekner’s main purpose is to bring attention to inadequate housing, poor services and deplorable social problems that afflicted the neighborhood residents for decades.

Wall Blood Series 1976 to 1981
That fine art was nonexistent in P.S. 1 before it became a workspace for artists, I don’t think can be disputed. But, in the seven months that I’ve been working within its decaying walls, I’ve come to believe that the building itself possesses some of the qualities present in the best art being produced today.
Mother Earth Will Survive May 2010
John Fekner and Don Leicht were invited to participate in the outdoor street exhibition Welling Court Mural Project organized by Ad Hoc Art in Astoria, NY. After a preliminary visit to the site, they decided to paint on a wall directly facing the Two Coves Community Garden and the NYCHA Astoria Houses Development. The location of their collaborative site-specific work was important for two reasons: not only did it connect with the thriving energy of the volunteer-run urban garden; it also provided a platform to address the catastrophic BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In the series, X Americana X, Fekner spray paints over kitschy found paintings to represent environmental disasters and looming annihilation.
