TREES

Trees

Queens, NY 1979
Fekner’s early work, a series of portraits in india ink on large canvasses (1973-74), were practically invisible to the eye. That concept of perception and transformation continued in his stencil project entitled Historical Notes that began in 1978. Ocean, Trees and Woods were part of the series that includes historical references to old town names of Queens including Blissville, Dutch Kills and Newtown. In this project, Fekner wanted to remind the viewer that not only are towns and cities disappearing, but that nature itself might also just one day become a memory.
